Article found in a Portland Homeowner’s Association Newsletter: A home maintenance schedule and home readiness procedures are equally important. Service technicians suggest that every six months homeowners should:
- Check all fire extinguishers.
- Test batteries in smoke and carbon dioxide extinguishers and flashlights.
- Check the charge in fire extinguishers.
- Change filters on heating/cooling units monthly.
- Check the water heater for leaks. Drain annually to reduce sediment.
- Make all family members aware of an evacuation plan which should include a pre-established meeting place.
- Make sure all family members know the locations of and procedures for shutting off gas, water and electricity.
- Prepare an evacuation kit and keep close to an exit door in the event you would have to evacuate your home on short notice. A checklist of things you might want to include can be found at www.ready.gov, www.redcross.org and www.noaa.com. These all include great information about essenial items needed, steps to follow and alternative resources with relevant information regarding local hazards to be aware of in your area.
