Water Damage Steps After a water loss, fast action on your part will help minimize the time and expense for repairs, resulting in a faster recovery. After water damage has occurred, the first 24 to 48 hours are critical in preventing additional damage and mold growth. Here are some simple steps that could be taken to minimize the damage.
- If water is flowing into your home, shut off the water supÂply immediatelv. Typically, the water supply shut off is found where the water supply line enters the home. If emergency plumbing repairs are necessary, keep an itemized record of the repair expenses. It would be very prudent to find the supply line PRIOR to a water loss.
- Make sure your electric source to the damaged area is disÂconnected.
- To prevent the growth of bacteria and mildew, immediately remove all most content items and place in a dry location. Be sure to separate content items (upholstery, fabrics or other colored items) to prevent color bleeding. Blot or wipe wood furniture to remove excess moisture. Please retain these content materials so that the claims adjuster may properly evaluate them. Do not throw anything away until the inspection!
- If content items are too heavy to remove, place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and carpet. Open furniture doors and drawers to expedite drying
- Standing water must be removed immediately. Use an appliÂance that is designed to remove water, such as a wet vac. CallÂing a water restoration company may be necessary if the standing water encompasses a large area.
- Place large buckets or pans underneath sagging ceilings. If possible, punch small holes in sagging ceilings to relieve trapped water.
- When standing water has been removed and it is safe to reconnect electricity, use fans to circulate the air and assist in drying. In summer months, use air conditioners and dehumidiÂfiers if available. During winter months, open windows to speed drying process. Keep thermostat at 70 degrees. Increasing the thermostat could promote growth of bacteria and mildew.
